The MSc in Educational Leadership is designed to offer teachers, lecturers and educational managers in schools and colleges a unique opportunity to reflect upon their own practice and to enhance their leadership and management knowledge.
The programme examines current issues underlying the concept of leadership for organizational success in the 21 st century, and provides a structured programme of development aimed at linking theory, research and educational practice.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
At least three years teaching experience, or alternatively, an equivalent professional status in an educational organization plus:
- A minimum of 3 years teaching/lecturing experience plus either
- A first degree from a recognized university or its equivalent or
- UK qualified teacher status or its equivalent professional status overseas, in an
educational organization.
COURSE STRUCTURE
The degree has a modular format. For the award of the MSc, students are required to complete three out of five 'content' modules, a Research Methods module and a 15-20,000-word dissertation. Assessment of each 'content' module is by a 4-5,000 word written assignment.
COURSE MODULES
- EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP AND STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT
This module promotes an understanding of leadership and strategic management issues in a variety of cultural contexts and helps students to become more effective leaders and managers.
This module enables students to become more effective managers of the curriculum within their own working environment by presenting a range of per4spectives from different international settings and phases of education.
- MANAGING FINANCE AND EXTERNAL RELATIONS IN EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS
This module enables students to become more effective leaders in relation to the key areas of financial management in schools and colleges and in relation to external liaison and accountability structures. Models of financial management and accountability in different cultural contexts are examined.
- HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT IN EDUCATION
This module introduces the principal theoretical and ethical issues which underpin approaches to the leadership of staff in schools and colleges in various cultural settings. It examines a range of frameworks for the leadership and management of staff.
This module enables students to understand the external and internal influences upon education, as experienced through educational policy at local, national or institutional level. It draws upon international and phase-related examples to enable students to develop a comparative perspective.
This module provides comprehensive introduction to the research methodologies and strategies, which are needed to undertake, evaluate and present a small scale research project. The module is linked directly to the dissertation for which it effectively provides an extended proposal.
This comprises an extended study culminating in a written dissertation of 15,000 to 20,000 words.

All students are awarded the Advanced Certificate on the successful completion of one module. Students may then choose to terminate their studies at any stage, leaving the programme with any one of the subsequent qualifications.
