Msc/Pgdip Security And Risk Management
 

This innovative course has been designed to enable you to develop a detailed knowledge of different aspects of crime, risk and managing security in organizations. It will develop your understanding of a range of theoretical models that explain why and how people commit crime, how to analyze and assess risk, and how to manage security. You will also learn how to design, conduct and critically appraise effective research within these areas. For people who work within a security context, either in the public or private sector, this course will be of immense professional value.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

  1. First or Second Class Honour Degree or
  2. Equivalent Professional Qualification

The University of Leicester will give special consideration to applications form people with significant work experience in these areas, these applicants are usually asked to submit an assignment for assessment purposes.

COURSE STRUCTURE

The course consists of six core modules, all of which must be successfully completed to attain the Postgraduate Diploma in Security and Risk Management. To achieve your MSc degree, you must also pass the dissertation.

COURSE MODULES

  • CRIME AND THE WORKPLACE

Provides students with a thorough knowledge of the different dimensions of the study of crime at work, drawing upon a variety of criminological investigation techniques.

  • APPLIED CRIME MANAGEMENT

Introduces students to the ways in which theories of crime and risk analysis can be applied in crime management, and provides and in-depth understanding of how information can be used and managed to inform practice.

  • RESEARCH METHODS IN SECURITY AND RISK MANAGEMENT

Explores theoretical and practical questions, using examples and case studies, to equip students with a comprehensive understanding of methodological issues in the study of security, crime and risk management.

  • MANAGING RISK AND SECURITY

Examines contemporary debates about risk management in the social sciences. Specific attention is focused on a range of risk issues relevant to security managers.

  • LAW, PROCEDURES AND SECURITY MANAGEMENT

Sets the relationship between law and security in context. It discusses principles of law rather than specific laws, making it highly relevant to a range of legal systems.

  • MANAGEMENT, ORGANISATIONS AND SECURITY

Provides an in-depth examination of a range of management issues relevant to security managers including theoretical perspectives, an evaluation of management styles and how these relate to different types of organization.

  • DISSERTATION

The final stage towards your MSc degree is the completion of a dissertation of between 15,000 and 20,000 words. Its aim is to enable you to undertake research into a subject of your own choosing, as you apply the theoretical knowledge and methodological skills you have gained throughout the course.

The course has been prepared by lecturers who are at the forefront of research in this field. Subject information is updated regularly to keep abreast of this fast changing subject area, and the very latest distance teaching techniques are geared to providing an intellectually stimulating, enjoyable and enriching learning experience.

HOW IS THE COURSE ASSESSED?

The course is based on continuous assessment, with each of the six study modules comprising a written paper of not more than 4,000 words. Having passed the six modules, you will then be eligible for the Postgraduate Diploma in Security and Risk Management. Each module lasts 12 weeks, 3 weeks of which are set aside for you to write your assignment. You will have approximately five months to complete your dissertation. Upon passing the dissertation, you will be awarded the MSc degree.
