MSc/PgDip/CPD in Electrical Power Systems

The Electrical Power Systems distance learning programme aims to provide participants with the skills they need to meet today’s challenges in the Electrical Industry. The programme will enable the student to plan and operate electrical power systems that are efficient and reliable, while balancing cost considerations with safety requirements. The programme has been developed by the University’s Electrical Power and Energy Systems Group – widely recognised as a centre of research excellence. In addition, the University of Bath is ranked 11 th in the Top 119 UK Universities in the Times Newspaper League Table 2004 , and is an Institute of Electronic Engineering (IEE) accredited organisation.

Target Audience

  • Engineers
  • Managers in the Electrical Power Systems Industry

Entry Requirements

  • For MSc or Postgraduate Diploma:
  • Recognised first degree in Engineering
  • Professional qualification of a similar standard acceptable to the University
  • Candidates who have achieved CPD in the engineering/electrical field would be highly considered
  • Experience in the electrical industry is also taken into consideration
  • Continuing Professional Development (CPD):
  • There are no specific entry requirements for CPD

Programme Content

Electrical Power Systems by Distance Learning consists of eleven independent and integrated modules:

  • System Fundamentals (core module)
  • Project Engineering (core module)
  • Protection of Transmission Systems
  • Protection of Distribution Systems
  • Power System Planning
  • Power System Simulation and Analysis
  • Control of Power Systems
  • Operation and Management of Power Systems
  • Power System Plant
  • Transient and Overvoltage Phenomena
  • Contract Engineering
  • Artificial Intelligence in Power Systems

M.Sc – Students need to complete eight of the above modules, plus a dissertation (the two core modules are compulsory)

Postgraduate Diploma – Students complete the two core modules and choose six from the remaining modules

CPD – Students pursue only those modules which are relevant to their jobs. Each module can be studied as independent certified qualifications

Assessment

Assessment for the MSc is by means of assignments, examinations and a dissertation.

  • Assignments

There are two or more assignments relating to the theory in the material in each module. These will normally take the form of multiple-choice questions, short answer questions and/or a problem solving exercise. The assignments are tutor-marked and form the basis of continuous assessment for the MSc or Postgraduate Diploma

  • Examinations

There will be an examination at the end of each module. Examinations are normally two hours in length with students required to answer three out of a possible five questions. These are normally held twice a year.

  • Dissertation

The aim of the dissertation is to show your ability to carry out detailed research. Dissertations are typically between 10,000 – 20,000 words in length and will relate to an approved topic in electrical power systems. Students who are sponsored by their companies may choose a topic that will be additionally beneficial to their employers.

Residential Schools

MSc and Postgraduate Diploma students must attend 3 compulsory blocks of 5 day tuition sessions conducted by the University of Bath Lecturers at SBCS.

Duration

A maximum of 5 years is allowed for MSc participants to complete the course. However, the programme is normally completed within a 2 to 3 year period.
